How to Choose a Cosmetic Option That’s Right for You
Thankfully, you don’t have to choose cosmetic dentistry on your own. We’ll be your trusted partner in making recommendations and guiding you toward the treatments you really need to achieve your goals.
Before recommending any cosmetic dentistry services, we’ll do a full dental exam. We’ll look at the health of your teeth, jaw and gums. Then we’ll explain what we recommend in order of importance. We know budgeting and prioritizing are important to you, so we’ll partner with you in achieving a great smile in the time and budget you have.
We always aim to save your natural teeth while enhancing their comfort and beauty with simple services. To get started, we ask you a list of questions to better understand your goals.
- What areas of your dental health and appearance would you like to correct?
- How complex are your dental problems?
- What cosmetic dentistry procedure options do you have?
- What does the treatment process look like and how long will it take?
- Does the treatment provide long-term results?
- How expensive is the procedure and what financing options are available?
- Will your insurance cover the service in whole or in part?
Once we've worked with you to answer these important questions, we'll consult with you to decide the best next steps. We'll do all we can to ease any anxiety you might have about the services and can use nitrous, IV or oral conscious sedation to help you feel comfortable.
Teeth Whitening for a Brighter Smile
Your smile’s vibrant white color can fade due to staining from dark foods and drinks. As time goes on, your enamel will look darker and darker. A teeth whitening treatment can help brighten your smile in one office visit.
At our office, we use safe and effective whitening gel to remove stubborn stains. Don’t want to have to wait in our office for results? We also offer take-home whitening.
We’ll help restore your teeth to their original vibrant white. For teeth with severe discoloration, we recommend veneers. Teeth whitening will only work on your natural teeth. For teeth with caps, fillings or other restorations, talk to your dentist about replacing these with new, whiter restorations.
About Our Take-home Whitening Service
Most patients don’t want or need another appointment. For our busy patients or those who don’t live super close to the office, we offer take-home whitening kits. To get started, you visit our office one time for impressions so we can create your custom whitening tray.
We’ll give you a call once your trays are ready and you can pick them up at your convenience. During your pickup visit, we’ll explain how to use your whitening trays and provide the gel you need.
With only two whitening sessions a day for about two weeks, you'll start to see noticeable results. During the treatment period, you might have some tooth sensitivity. You can use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to reduce this discomfort. No teeth whitening treatment is permanent, but if you avoid dark-colored foods and drinks and rinse your mouth after eating or drinking anything, you'll keep your bright smile longer.
About Composite Fillings
Modern fillings use composite material to match your fillings to your tooth instead of the old silver amalgam fillings. These tooth-colored fillings are especially important when repairing front teeth to avoid noticeable fillings when you smile. Over time, your fillings might break down and need to be replaced. With proper at-home care and regular visits to your dentist, you can expect composite fillings to last a decade or more.
Thanks to a better bonding process compared to amalgam fillings, we can preserve more of your tooth’s structure and enamel. We can use these fillings to repair cracks or chips on your teeth in a hardly noticeable way.
Step-by-step Composite Filling Process
It only takes one visit to our office for a composite filling. Here’s a step-by-step look at the process for completing a composite filling.
- Dr. Guller will remove decay and clean the tooth.
- Then, we’ll add the composite filling material.
- We polish and shape the tooth to match your original smile and bite.
After a filling, you might have some sensitivity to hot and cold foods. As your tooth gets used to the filling, this sensitivity will ease.
What You Need to Know About Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a great way to enhance the look of your teeth. These are custom shells that fit over the front of your teeth to give them the shape and color you design. Veneers can help treat the following appearance issues you might face with your teeth.
- Dark stains that cannot be removed with whitening
- Chips or cracks of the teeth that alter their appearance
- Minorly crooked teeth.
- Extra spaces between the teeth
We make veneers using fabricated porcelain material. This material is better at resisting stains and bonds well to your natural teeth. They reflect light in the same way your natural teeth do to keep your smile looking great.
Patients with good oral health but minor cosmetic defects in their teeth are good candidates for veneers. Additionally, patients who grind their teeth are not good candidates for veneers as this can break them down
Porcelain veneers are generally good for seven to 15 years. The better you care for your teeth, the longer your veneers will last.
How Porcelain Crowns Restore a Tooth’s Look and Function
Teeth are designed to sustain regular pressure. Using porcelain, we can simulate the same look and function of your natural teeth when you need a crown. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that goes over your natural tooth to completely encase it all the way to the gum line.
While there are other materials we can craft a crown from, porcelain is the material of choice since it matches your tooth’s natural color and look. Crowns can help a variety of dental issues, including:
- Protecting weak teeth
- Restoring a tooth’s function and look
- Supporting dental bridges
- Adding the final touch to a dental implant
- Fixing teeth that are misshapen or discolored
These crowns are very durable and can provide outstanding protection and beauty for your tooth for many years. However, you should maintain a healthy oral hygiene regimen and avoid bad habits, such as using your teeth to open things, biting your nails, chewing ice or grinding and clenching your jaw. This will help extend the life of your porcelain crown.
What’s the Difference Between Veneers and Crowns?
Now that you’ve read about both porcelain veneers and crowns, you might be wondering what the difference between the two is. While both restorative dental services help make your teeth beautiful and functional, they do serve different purposes.
Veneers only cover the outside of your teeth, whereas crowns encase the entire tooth. Crowns will likely last longer than veneers and provide cavity protection to the teeth they cover. When getting a crown, we do remove more enamel due to the issues we're working to fix with the procedure. If you're unsure whether you need a crown or veneers, just know that we'll guide you in choosing the right treatment for you.
What Are Cosmetic Gum Treatments?
If your gums lie too low or high on your teeth, your dentist might recommend cosmetic gum treatments. This is a process that contours and shapes your gums to improve their appearance and remove extra tissue that covers your teeth. Sometimes, dentists recommend this treatment to help a crown fit better if you have extra gum tissue.
The healthier your gums are, the better your overall oral health will be. You’ll also have a better-looking smile if your gums are contoured to match your teeth. Our periodontal treatments can help your gums stay in great shape and superb health.

"A little over three years ago, my older daughter Carolyn, had a bicycle accident. One of her permanent front teeth was actually knocked out. We called the office and they told us to come in immediately. It was about 6 p.m. Everyone was concerned and helpful. Dr.Guller reinserted her tooth. Needless to say, we were very frequent visitors to this office. Everyone knew us and always asked how Carolyn was doing. With everyone’s long-term help, Carolyn’s teeth look great!
